History

The Netherland Dwarf is one of the smallest rabbit breeds, originating in the Netherlands in the early 20th century. Through selective breeding of smaller Polish rabbits and wild rabbits, breeders created this distinctive tiny breed that quickly gained popularity worldwide.

Description

Netherland Dwarfs are known for their compact bodies, short ears, and large heads relative to their body size. They typically weigh between 1.1 to 2.5 pounds. Despite their small size, they have bold personalities and come in a wide variety of colors. Their tiny size makes them popular as house pets, but they require careful handling due to their fragile bones.

History

The Holland Lop was created in the Netherlands in the 1950s by Adriann de Cock, who aimed to produce a miniature version of the French Lop. By crossing French Lops with Netherland Dwarfs, he successfully created this adorable dwarf lop breed that was recognized in the Netherlands in 1964 and later worldwide.

Description

Holland Lops are small, compact rabbits with a muscular body and distinctive floppy ears that hang down beside their head. They typically weigh between 2-4 pounds. Known for their sweet temperament and playful nature, Holland Lops make excellent family pets. Their ears should be lopped (hanging down) from birth, and they come in a wide array of colors and patterns.

History

The Jersey Wooly was developed in the United States in the 1980s by Bonnie Seeley of High Bridge, New Jersey. She crossed a Netherland Dwarf with a French Angora rabbit to create a small, wool-producing breed with a gentle temperament. The breed was recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 1988.

Description

Jersey Woolies are small rabbits weighing between 1-3 pounds, known for their soft, wooly fur that requires regular grooming. They have a compact body, short ears, and a friendly, docile temperament that makes them excellent pets. Their wool comes in various colors and is similar to angora but easier to maintain. They are often described as "gentle teddy bears" due to their sweet nature and fluffy appearance.

History

The Flemish Giant is one of the oldest and largest recognized rabbit breeds, originating in the Flanders region of Belgium as early as the 16th century. Originally bred for meat and fur, these "gentle giants" were imported to America in the early 20th century and quickly became popular as show animals and pets due to their impressive size and calm temperament.

Description

Flemish Giants are massive rabbits, with adults typically weighing 13-14 pounds or more, and some reaching over 20 pounds. They have a semi-arch body type, long powerful legs, and broad heads. Despite their imposing size, they are known for their docile, gentle nature and are often called "gentle giants." They require more space and food than smaller breeds but make wonderful, calm companions.

History

Angora rabbits are one of the oldest types of domestic rabbits, originating in Ankara (historically known as Angora), Turkey. They were brought to France in the 18th century and became popular with French royalty. The English Angora was developed in England through selective breeding for their distinctive wooly appearance and has been prized for centuries for their luxurious wool.

Description

English Angoras are small to medium-sized rabbits weighing 5-7.5 pounds, completely covered in long, soft wool that requires daily grooming to prevent matting. Their wool grows about 1 inch per month and can be harvested every 3-4 months. They have a rounded body shape with wool covering their entire body including their face and ears, giving them a distinctive "pom-pom" appearance. They are gentle, friendly rabbits that require dedicated care due to their high-maintenance coats.
